Ahead of his new project, Arnold Schwarzenegger discusses his divorce from Maria Shriver.

At the Robert F. Kennedy Tennis Tournament in 1977, Arnold Schwarzenegger met journalist Maria Shriver. At the time, he was in an open relationship with a Beverly Hills hairdresser’s assistant named Sue Moray, and he would date both Moray and Shriver until August 1978, when Moray issued him an ultimatum.

Eight years later, on April 26, 1986, Schwarzenegger and Shriver married and stayed married for the next 25 years. During that time, Katherine Schwarzenegger, 33, Christina Schwarzenegger, 31, Patrick Schwarzenegger, 29, and Christopher Schwarzenegger, 25, were born.

Unfortunately, when Schwarzenegger fathered a fifth kid, Joseph Baena, with the couple’s longstanding housekeeper, Mildred Patricia “Patty” Baena, in 1997, their marriage quickly fell apart. Shriver filed for divorce from the spouse on May 9, 2011, and the divorce was finalized in 2021.

On May 16, Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his divorce from Maria Shriver, comparing it to the one his character, Luke Brunner, goes through in the new television series, FUBAR. The new show will launch on May 25.

“We were laughing about it — it feels like it’s documentary,” Schwarzenegger recalls, alluding to his character in the show cheating on his wife, which eventually leads to the divorce. “The difference is that in the show, he doesn’t think it’s cheating because (seducing CIA assets) is part of his job.”

He then refers to his real-life divorce from Shriver as my f**k up’ and my failure.’ While he doesn’t appear to miss being married, he does say that the divorce was very painful at first and that he needed time to move on. He eventually did and is currently dating physical therapist Heather Milligan.

“You eventually move on.” Heather is a beautiful and successful girlfriend of mine. I’m very proud of her and adore her. I adore my wife at the same time. “She and I are very close friends, and we are very proud of how we raised our children,” Schwarzenegger told The Hollywood Reporter.

While Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver are no longer married, they have remained friendly as co-parents and continue to spend family holidays together, including Easter, Mother’s Day, Christmas, and everyone’s birthdays. He went on to praise the couple’s handling of the divorce.

“If there are Oscars for how to handle divorce, Maria and I should win for having the least impact on the children.” My wife is responsible for the sweetness and generosity you see in them. “I’m responsible for the discipline and work ethic,” he said in an interview, adding that they still do everything as a family.

Shriver spoke about her divorce from Schwarzenegger on the Making Space With Hoda Kotb podcast in February. She admits to going to a convent – a community of monks, nuns, religious brothers, sisters, or priests – for advice and to live in quiet for a short time after the divorce.

She recounted a conversation she had with the reverend’s mother, who advised her on ‘getting out and being Maria.’ “I’d never allowed myself to feel, to be vulnerable, to be weak, to be brought to my knees.” And it was the world’s fault. “I was like, ‘OK, God, let’s go,'” Shriver explained.
