Billie Eilish, a musician, and her brother, Finneas, a producer, attended the 2024 Oscars last night. Many individuals were unaware of the meaning behind the pins that actors Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, Ramy Youssef, and Quannah Chasinghorse had on their clothing.
Later, the pin was also spotted on actor Mahershala Ali, who accepted this year’s Best Supporting Actor nominees on stage rather than by walking the red carpet.
As none of these celebrities have collaborated on a project together, many people were perplexed as to what the pin indicated. That pin was red, spherical, and in question. It was encircled by a little black heart shaped like a hand.
Many individuals were unaware of the pin’s meaning. The artists supported the demand for an end to Israel’s war on Gaza by wearing these pins. Over 30,000 individuals have lost their lives in the Gaza Strip since Israel’s conflict started on October 7, according to health officials there. As nearly half of Gaza’s population is under the age of 18, many of the victims of Israel’s bombardment were children.
As the sixth month of Palestinian civilian deaths begins, there are more calls than ever for a ceasefire in the area. Not just in Hollywood have many artists embraced the cry for peace. Over 400 well-known individuals have joined Artists4Ceasefire in their campaign. The campaign sent out a letter at the end of October requesting that President Joe Biden and the US Congress demand an immediate cessation of hostilities in Israel and Gaza.
However, very few celebrities wore the peace-calling pins at the 2024 Oscars, in contrast to the pins that backed causes like the Time’s Up movement in 2018, which were worn by practically all celebrities on the red carpet. The only people spotted wearing the same pins at the Grammy Awards earlier this year were Boygenius and Annie Lennox. On stage, Lennox made it a point to request calm.
On the red carpet, Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud, who starred in the film Anatomy of a Fall, were spotted sporting pins depicting the Palestinian flag.
Actor and comedian Ramy Youssef, who acted alongside Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo in the film “Poor Things,” expressed frustration that the call for a truce and the conclusion of the war against Gaza was not progressing.
Youssef alluded to the request for a truce in an interview by saying, “There’s no other route.” It’s taking a long time. That’s what we’re all urging people to speak up about.
Celebrities who signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter included Jennifer Lopez, America Ferrera, Ben Affleck, Cate Blanchett, and Bradley Cooper.
