Being a mother is difficult, to put it mildly. You basically have to care for a tiny human being 24 hours a day when you raise a child; it’s not an easy task. It’s demanding and exhausting, but also incredibly gratifying.
In today’s story, a mother who was traveling with her three-month-old child was told to cover up while nursing the child.
Texas mother Melanie Dudley was in Cabo San Lucas for a vacation. She began to breastfeed her child one day while eating lunch at a corner table, and this drew unwanted attention.
She was instructed to cover up by an unexpected visitor. She quietly covered her face with a blanket and continued to breastfeed her child instead of disputing what the man stated!
Melanie stated the following to Yahoo! Lifestyle:
“I was on vacation in Cabo San Lucas with my entire family and a man asked me to cover myself,”
“I’m usually discreet but we were seated in the back of the restaurant.”
“I did have the cover on, but it was so hot. It was like, 95 degrees, and my little baby was sweating,”
While this was happening, her husband snapped a picture of her and shared it on Facebook. Melanie’s acts and unwavering mother instincts were universally praised and applauded.
People commented on her popular photo and said it was the correct thing to do for her to put her child’s needs ahead of everything else.
Twin boys aged four are also Melanie’s children! Melanie mentioned breastfeeding in public and said:
“It was impossible to do both at the same time when we were out so I never had this problem. With my little one, it’s so much easier to nurse out in public.”
As a society, we must be more understanding, helpful, and compassionate towards mothers. The least we can do when we observe a woman caring for her child is to mind our own business. Raising happy, healthy children is difficult enough.
Melanie, more power to you!
