The woman’s sister invited her to a fancy restaurant and then left her to pay the bill.

After moving to the town where she was residing, a woman claimed that her sister had invited her to a restaurant. The woman was astonished to discover that her sister had vanished from the restaurant when it came time to pay the bill.

On the r/AITA subreddit on Reddit, she had posted her experience. She was explaining that her sister had relocated to her town with her boyfriend. “Recently, my sister and her boyfriend moved to a nearby town. Since we can now see one other more, I was thrilled. There is a downtown area close by with lots of dining options, shopping, art galleries, etc. My spouse and I have a particular fondness for an elegant dining establishment. It costs between $200 and $250 for a dinner for two, so we don’t usually go there.

The woman had informed her sister that the restaurant was posh and that her sister had invited her. “yesterday week, my sister gave me a call and asked us to supper at their restaurant yesterday night. We can go somewhere else—there are a ton of amazing places—and I warned her that it was an expensive place and to check at the menu first since they are exorbitant. They still wanted to go, she said. We agreed as we hadn’t been there in a long. Dinner was excellent.

Her sister and her boyfriend vanished as their supper was concluding, and she received a text from her. “My sister excuses herself to go the restroom after the meal, and her boyfriend rushes to find her when she doesn’t return too quickly. Eventually, neither of them returns. When we go to look for them, they are not there. She texts me back, saying they’ve departed but thank you for dinner—it was exactly as amazing as you said it would be. I call or text her.

She then threatened to give her details of the location so they could file a lawsuit if she didn’t show up there in 30 minutes. “She did not answer when I asked what she meant. I texted her once again, but got no response, wondering whether she had simply saddled us with the bill. I immediately contacted her to tell her that I had never committed to pay for them and to return to the restaurant within 30 minutes, failing which I would give the restaurant all of her details and they would probably call the police.

Then, when her sister failed to appear, she followed her instructions. “No answer. I texted/called at the 30-minute mark, but I didn’t hear back. I therefore kept my promise. After paying for my husband’s and my share and giving the manager all of her details for their share, I walked out.

The following day, she received a call from her sister informing her that the restaurant had contacted and that the police would be called to handle the problem. “She called me back the following day, upset that the restaurant had been calling her and demanding payment or else they would call the police,” she said. I replied that given that she neglected to pay her bill, I’m not shocked. She claimed that because I had previously paid for our dinners together, which had a maximum tab of $60, she assumed that I was picking up the tab.

“I said this was obviously different from the other times we met for dinner (this was all four of us AND at an upscale restaurant), and I was not paying the $450 tab and she had to cover her portion,” she said, explaining that she had warned her about the place. She picked the place and extended the invitation, I reminded her. Although she expressly insisted on going to this place, I asked if she would rather go somewhere else.

She continued by saying that before calling the police, her sister ought to go pay her bills. “I never promised to cover everyone’s expenses. She went on to say that she had assumed I would just pay, but that when I asked the waiter for separate checks, she realized I wasn’t, so she planned to skip us and get to the bathroom. I advised her to simply go in and pay, and the matter would be resolved, as the restaurant hadn’t yet called the police.

“She didn’t want to do that because it would be too embarrassing and asked me to cover it,” the woman said in closing her account. Once more, I told her to take care of it and answered no. Our family has been involved, and I feel under pressure to just cover the expense. If I allow the restaurant to call the police, will it be an AITA? It goes without saying that I will never pay for anything again.
